Every month at the Paradise Theatre, curator and host Peter Knegt is offering queers (and anyone who loves them) a classic queer film, special guests and performers, and some good old fashioned drinks and conversation in the Paradise’s stunning lobby bar. Each film is paired with a different local queer artist, who will design an original poster for the screening.
Our second summer guest curators are the dynamic duo of Devery Jacobs and D.W. Waterson (the star and filmmaker behind the fantastic new queer cheerleading film Backspot), and they’ve chosen a very special film: Alice Wu’s tender, charming 2004 rom com Saving Face!
Jacobs and Waterson say of the film:
“Saving Face, the heartwarming debut feature from Alice Wu, follows Wil (Michelle Frusiec), a closeted lesbian who lives with her judgmental mother, Hwei-Ian (Joan Chen). From a sexy, secret queer relationship, to an out-of-wedlock, geriatric pregnancy, both mother and daughter harbor romantic secrets that challenge the norms of what it means to be a good member of their community.
Each of the performances are complex, the writing is laugh-out-loud funny and Wu infuses so much of her culture into every frame. This film weaves the balance between being true to oneself and honoring the culture in which you’re from, while highlighting a romance you want to stand up and cheer for.
Saving Face is a breath of fresh air in a queer cinema landscape that is oftentimes so very white. We are both Alice Wu stans — not only is Saving Face is one of our favorite queer movies, but it’s one of our favorite films ever. It feels as relevant today as it did 20 years ago, and we selfishly wanted to watch it on the big screen for the first time with the Queer Cinema Club!”
