During the 1990s, Toronto was an epicentre for dialogue around queer femme culture and identity and for diverse femme cultural production and political organizing. On Our Own Terms: Femme Life and Culture in Toronto, 1990-2000 explores the proliferation of queer and trans femme politics and culture in 1990s Toronto through archival materials and close to 50 oral history interviews with 24 queer and trans femme narrators.

The On Our Own Terms exhibit highlights key themes, experiences, and events that emerged across the oral interviews. Using a combination of archival materials and excerpts from our narrators’ stories, this exhibit explores femme identity, friendship, sexuality, and cultural production in 1990s Toronto.

Please join us for an opening reception on Thursday, September 24 from 6pm – 8pm.

Runs September 24 to October 18.

Open times and dates:
