Winter Kept Us Warm: Book Launch and Screening

Tuesday July 9, 7-9pm

Released in 1965, “Winter Kept Us Warm” is Canada’s first film about a gay romance. Shot by David Secter, a 22-year-old U of T student, "Winter" made waves when it hit the screens, scoring praise from big name critics and a coveted slot at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. But despite this initial flurry of attention, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of it. In the latest edition of the Queer Film Classics series (McGill-Queen’s University Press), author Chris Dupuis asks why this critical piece of queer history was very nearly erased and what lessons contemporary audiences can take from this story.

The event includes a rare screening of the film and a discussion with the author.
