Drag photography began as an act of visibility—a means to document and assert the existence of individuals challenging traditional gender norms. In its earliest forms, it served as straightforward documentation, capturing the presence of those who played with gender constructs. As drag evolved from underground performances to mainstream recognition, so too did its photographic portrayal.

The mainstream explosion of drag culture, propelled by shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race, has reshaped public perception and documentation of drag. Today, drag photography transcends mere documentation; it serves as a medium of expression, extending the performance itself.

WANGDERFUL celebrates this transformation through the artistry of Minhi Wang, a top four finalist in the fifth season of Canada’s Drag Race. This exhibition underscores the journey of drag photography from simple documentation to a recognized art form, meriting space in galleries and critical discourse.

Through Minhi Wang’s distinctive style and the diverse approaches of four photographers, WANGDERFUL showcases the breadth of contemporary drag imagery.
