Queers Playing in the M.U.D.
Learn how to ‘party’ like you are a closeted geek in 1995!

Before the internet had sound or pictures, it had text. And nerds all over the world created text-based worlds where you could be anyone and anything. For closeted geeks, this was a way to be yourself (or a fantasy version of yourself) full of creativity and anonymity. Many of us used M.U.D.s as a way to try out different genders, personas, seductions and sexualities. And Glad Day is bringing it back!

At this event, we will show you how to:

Log into a queer friendly M.U.D. that has been running since 1993
   Create a character
Practice the basic movements and commands
Interact and socialize with each other
Level up your character and next steps, if you want to keep playing

What is this M.U.D. going to be like?
The M.U.D. we will be learning on is based on real places in history. It is a mix of historically accurate places, places from novels, and totally fantastical places. You can use it as a place to socialize or you can ‘play the game’. The game involves levelling your character up and you can choose from roles like thief, mage, druid, warrior, bard, etc.

How long will this take?
It will be about 2 to 4 hours, but you can leave after about 90 minutes once you know the basics.

7pm - Welcome and Orientation

7:30pm - Learning the basic commands and socials, building your character

8:30pm - Forming virtual groups, exploring the ‘open world’

9:30pm - Doing what you want - Adventure! Learn! Flirt! Kill!

11:00pm - We kick you out (of the physical space, you can continue online!)

What to bring

You MUST bring a laptop with a keyboard. There will be lots of typing. (If you don’t have a laptop, email us because we have a few we can lend out)You can bring snacks and sober drinks, and we will have sober drinks for sale.

Don’t dress to impress, dress to be comfortable. You might want to bring headphones - the room could get very loud with talking and laughing, which can be super fun but it may also be distracting if you are deep into a group quest.

Tickets

Tickets are on a sliding scale of $7-$20 and there are some pay-what-you-can and pay-on-arrival slots.

Is this only for queer and trans attendees?

We are not going to test your identity at the door. No one is going to ask you how you identify. The beauty of the M.U.D. is that anyone can be anything. Everyone with an open mind, good vibes and playfulness is welcome to come play in the M.U.D. with us!

Questions?

You can send any questions or requests to vip@gladday.ca

Accessibility
The entrance, space and washrooms are wheelchair accessible.
This event can involve a lot of typing and reading, but you can also go at your own pace if being part of a group feels too fast. The M.U.D. can be a place you slowly explore, so there is a range of typing and reading 'speeds'.
Handouts will be provided to support the verbal instructions.
