Queer Britain: Culture, Community, and Creativity
Join Emily Garside, queer author and tutor at London’s Bishopsgate Institute, for a journey through the vibrant cultural history of LGBTQ+ life in the UK. From underground clubs and drag performances to queer theatre, literature, and community events, British queer culture has long been a space of creativity, joy, and resistance.
This talk examines how queer communities have carved out spaces to express their identity, celebrate difference, and build networks of support from the 1960s to the present day. Alongside these cultural narratives, Emily will reflect on the connections and parallels with Canada, highlighting how ideas, styles, and cultural practices have crossed borders.
The event concludes with an open discussion, inviting participants to share reflections, consider what these histories reveal about queer life today, and explore the ongoing legacy of UK queer culture.
