In the background of the legendary sketch comedy troupe Kids in the Hall’s inception and rise-to-fame, troupe co-founder Scott Thompson and writer Paul Bellini formed the inimitable queer punk band Mouth Congress.

Leading up to the band’s 2016 renegade reunion show at the Rivoli (and wrapped up in a fittingly cheeky framing device in which Kids in the Hall’s Kevin McDonald tells his instantly-obsessed niece the story of Mouth Congress), this unflinching portrait of a lovable pair of divas who bicker over lyrics and cell phones is an affectionate, honest and appropriately subversive snapshot of a hyper-niche band that demands to be known. The film resembles a variety show in the same way the band’s rare performances do—full of self-mythologizing, intimate footage of disagreements in the creative process, and an unabashedly queer spirit that embraces the duo’s “rejection of middle-class values and love of the bizarre” (to quote McDonald in the film’s narration).

Join us after the film for a rare and very special live performance from the band, as well as a Q&A with members Scott Thompson and Paul Bellini, moderated by Neal Armstrong. You will not want to miss this epic celebration of your new favorite Toronto band. A Truth and Dare event for the books!

Doors will open 60 minutes prior to the screening.
