Rhythm and Standard Time are proud to present the Toronto return of Egyptian Lover

A true architect of electro and 808-fueled funk, Egyptian Lover has spent over four decades shaping the sound of the underground. Emerging from Los Angeles in the early ’80s alongside Ice-T and Uncle Jamm’s Army, he fused hip-hop, funk and futurist electronics into something entirely his own—raw, robotic, and irresistibly physical.

Revered as a master of the Roland TR-808, his early anthems like “Egypt, Egypt” and “Freak-A-Holic” became foundational club records, bridging West Coast hip-hop energy with the sleek pulse of Kraftwerk and the sensual charge of Prince. The result: a blueprint for electro that still reverberates across dance floors today.

After a run of influential LPs throughout the ’80s and ’90s, Egyptian Lover returned in the new millennium with renewed force—releasing acclaimed albums 1985 (2018) and 1986 (2021) on his own Egyptian Empire imprint, and delivering viral Boiler Room moments and headline sets at Berghain, Fabric, Printworks and beyond.

What sets him apart is the performance itself. This isn’t a nostalgia act—it’s a live hybrid ritual. 808 drum machine in hand, vinyl in rotation, vocals live and direct, Egyptian Lover commands the room with the same electricity that defined his earliest recordings.

At Standard Time, expect a masterclass in electro: stripped-back drum machine pressure, elastic basslines, funk-laced synths and pure dance floor heat from one of the originators.

Joining him are two Toronto electronic pioneers in their own right; Tony Price and DJ Barbi.
