Welcome to “Dr’s Orders: A Journey Through Queer Cocktail History”, a captivating and inclusive monthly cocktail class that transcends the boundaries of mixology to explore the vibrant and often overlooked intersection of cocktail culture & Queer history. Led by award winning beverage expert, Meaghan Murray, this unique experience invites you to delve into the rich tapestry of Queer influences that have shaped cocktail culture. From classic libations that were created by Queer bartenders, favourites of historical Queer figures, to modern twists inspired by contemporary Queer icons, each class is a journey through time & flavour.
Participants will not only learn the art of crafting exquisite cocktails but will also gain a deeper understanding of the social and cultural contexts that have influenced the development of these drinks. Engaging discussions on the historical significance of various spirits, the evolution of bar culture, and the resiliency and creativity of the Queer community in the face of adversity will be woven seamlessly into the class. Each session will feature hands-on demonstration, allowing participants to shake, stir & sip their way through a curated selection of cocktails that embody Queer culture.
Dr’s Orders is not just a cocktail class; it’s a collaboration of identity, history and the art of mixology. Whether you’re a seasoned cocktail enthusiast or a complete novice, join us the last Wednesday of every month to raise your glass to the Queer voices who have left an indelible mark on the world of cocktail culture.
LESSON FOUR:
Queer West Toronto, The Departed & The Blackbird

Participants discover the story and flavour of Modern Classic, "The Departed", crafted by Sandy DeAlmeida, a prominent figure in the Toronto Queer Bar scene.
In addition to the "The Departed", participants will also learn about the history & significance of "The Blackbird" shot, another beloved libation associated with Toronto drinking culture, as we engage in insightful discussions about the cultural context surrounding each drink, exploring themes of identity, activism and community
